Abstract

Guardianes del Golfo is an investigative documentary series documenting the frontline defense of the Gulf of California against the encroaching Saguaro Project. The series serves as both a record of environmental resistance and a call to action, urging viewers to align with ECO and take up the mantle of "Guardianes" to protect one of the worlds most vital marine ecosystems.

This installment focuses on the Sonoran coast, centering the lived experiences of two distinct yet interconnected communities: Puerto Libertad and the indigenous Desemboque de los Seris. As the Saguaro Project threatens to restructure the regions geography and economy, the film examines the precarious future of those whose identities are inextricably linked to the sea.

The narrative highlights the deep-rooted stewardship of the Comcaac (Seri) people, whose spiritual and physical connection to the land has sustained the coast for generations. A primary focus is placed on the Grupo Tortuguero Comcaac, whose vital sea turtle incubation programs face total disruption if industrial development continues. By juxtaposing indigenous conservation with industrial expansion, the film illustrates the high cost of "progress"not only in the loss of biodiversity but in the erosion of a cultural heritage.

Seven Days. Two Communities.

In the rugged beauty of the Sonoran Desert, the Saguaro Project is casting a long shadow over Puerto Libertad and Desemboque de los Seris. As the Grupo Tortuguero Comcaac fights to save the nesting sea turtles of the Sea of Cortez, the local population faces a grim reality: if the fishing stops, the community fades. We went there to document what is at stake before the tide turns for good.
